Taiwan highlighted its efforts in greenhouse gas management and mitigation during a sideline event at the ongoing 19th session of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and ninth session of the Conference of the Parties in Warsaw, Poland, according to the ROC Environmental Protection Administration Nov. 16.
“Strict standards regulating large carbon dioxide emission sources and major developers have been established in Taiwan,” said Chien Hui-chen, counselor and executive director of the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reduction Management Office.
“We have also launched a preliminary early action and offset mechanism encouraging companies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through obtaining carbon credits under the Carbon Trade Exchange platform.”
Chien made the remarks at the Nov. 13 event, which explored possible improvements to key instruments such as the EU emissions trading system and use of sector specific roadmaps for industry. Other participants included Michel Adam, coordinator of environmental policy at the International Air Transport Association; Dirk Forrister, president and CEO of the International Emissions Trading Association; and Robin Rix, team leader Strategy for the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat sustainable development mechanisms program.
Chien highlighted the importance of improving Taiwan’s connectivity to the international carbon trade market mechanism, stating that the EU’s methods and experience in promoting carbon trading serves as a good example for newly industrialized nations and those not listed in Annex I of the UNFCCC
The COP 19, which runs Nov. 11-22, has attracted more than 10,000 participants from 190 countries. (RC-JSM)
